Patterns of Calm
Thanks for your interest in my art and my story.
I’ve always been attracted to line drawings, Celtic spirals, Indian Mehndi, Middle Eastern geometric designs, Asian calligraphy, to name just a few. So, it was no surprise that I was captivated by Zentangle® when it came into my life. It was after cancer treatment in 2014 when I was first introduced to this style of drawing, thoroughly entranced by the endless designs and fractal patterns it inspires.
For me, making art is a meditation in action, eliciting patterns of calm. Abstract art has been around since we were living in caves, tapping into a fundamental part of us – the pre-verbal part that experiences life without words. The lines, shapes, symbols, colors, and their creative expression reflect some part of my deeper self which is present at the moment of their inception. This process nourishes a natural desire for beauty, focus, clarity, and harmony. The playful patterns easily transport me to another realm, allowing entry to a place of mindfulness and peace. As meaning, power, and possibility visit the design created on the paper, they're joined by a focused and calm state of mind, making the free expression of this welcoming art a mostly non-verbal occasion in it's pursuit.
It is precisely this nonverbal dimension to our existence - often so personal it can’t be expressed in words – that sparks a kind of private process within, stirring responses through our individual filters and experience. Abstract art invites the observer to discover some deeper meaning mirrored by the work – something impactful on a personal level.
That said, we don't need to completely understand a piece to appreciate it. Whatever meaning that was present as it was first created may or may not be the meaning for you. Especially since the hooks and eyes of our appreciation are always so uniquely our own...
Thank you for joining me on this delightful journey of discovery!
